The album's cover artwork leaked first on Polish auction website http://allegro.pl. Including a phone number to call to inform the US Bureau of Morality of possible consumption or spreading of subversive material, 1-866-445-6580. The phone number was revealed a bit too early and originally said "mail box number 4456580" in a female voice. Later in the day it was replaced with the real message:
"This is a message from the United States Bureau of Morality.

Pursuant of statute 24.12.2 disclosure of surveillance.


Citizen, by calling this number, you and your family are implicitly pleading guilty to the consumption of anti-American media and have been flagged as potential militants. The United States Bureau of Morality has activated the tracking system embedded in your personal media and initiated citizen surveillance.

United States Surveillance Log gives us the right to search and seize information relating to subversive activity from your person, vehicle, workplace, or home. Any attempt to hinder or prevent our investigation will be met with all necessary force.

You are now part of the problem.
Your re-education is about to begin.
God bless America.".

The album leaked in high quality mp3 format, with the exception of The Beginning of the End, on various torrent and p2p sites. (Humorously it was up and down all day on Oink.me.uk due to the inclusion of a bad, transcoded copy of TBOTE.)

Trent and Rob took action that apparently they had been prepared to take for a few weeks. They introduced the Year Zero player on The Spiral and yearzero.nin.com, allowing fans the opportunity to legally stream the full album in 256kbps high quality.

A couple of fans discovered a way to rip the mp3s from the stream, leaving extremely high quality versions of the album in consistent, non-transcoded form:
